The Inferno waves are the numbered waves of the The Inferno that Gnomonkey analyses wave by wave. Early on the aim is to maintain prayer and pillar health. He says a player realistically should not have used any brew until at least wave 48, though this is only a soft goal while learning.6 On first attempts it is a good idea to use up brews and restores to confirm you reach the later waves and learn them.6
His top priority throughout is not dying. If nibblers can be killed safely it is done first in a wave, but after wave 50 they cannot be chased safely.7 See Jal-Nib for the full nibbler strategy.
General principles
- Mages: On waves with mages, a run can start without the crystal shield on to improve the chance of landing barrages.8 By contrast, in 2026 he advises not unequipping the Crystal shield between waves: its negative mage bonus only changes accuracy from 96.35% to 96.69%, and people end up forgetting to put it on at wave 50.9
- Prayer and armour: From wave 49 (which introduces a ranger), the ancestral top should not be worn at the start of waves; stay in Armadyl with an occult, Kodai and shield, and start waves praying Augury to cut splash chance and damage from the ranger and blobs.10 In 2022 he said that from about wave 50 he wears the crystal body and prays Augury at wave start to prepare for a possible range hit.11
- Isolation: On waves with a mage and ranger, they must be isolated rapidly. If both are on the player on the same tick, the player will probably die, so get a pillar between you and one of them or off-tick and flick them if confident.12
- Start tile: He starts every wave on the same tile because it has the most line of sight on nibblers and the least on mobs, minimising off-spawn hits.13
- Health: He starts waves in the 50s and 60s at full health, as health gives options.14
- Off-ticking: A player rarely has to off-tick unless the spawn is very bad. A one-tick alternate that tanks a blob punch is inefficient but fine, and many people discount an area because a monster is there when it is still usable.15
- Pillars: It is okay for pillars to take some damage on dangerous waves like wave 31 rather than chasing nibblers.16 It is also okay to lose pillars late, as defending the last pillar when the monsters converge is easy.17
Waves
Opinions on which wave is hardest have evolved. In 2021 he called wave 63 the most difficult and "the works"; in 2022 he still called it the worst wave; by 2026 he called it the hardest on average of the whole Inferno, while also saying that wave 61 is very hard and the wave after it is the hardest of all.2183
| Wave | Notes |
|---|---|
| 31 | The big nasty wave; waves after it are free by comparison.19 |
| 32 | The first mage spawns.1 |
| 41 | Two blobs; another big scary wave where a lot of people die.20 |
| 48 | The first difficult wave (mage, melee and two blobs): isolate the melee from the mage and the blobs under a strict time limit, as it can dig to the player's position.121 The early fifties (around 53) are relatively easy.21 |
| 49 | Introduces a ranger; see armour advice above.10 |
| 53 | Can be started with Rigor or Augury; he prefers Rigor so he is set up to shoot something immediately.14 |
| 56 | One of the most dangerous waves, with a mage, ranger and two blobs.22 On bad spawns, stepping from the south to the pillar position will be the default solve on many waves.23 |
| 57 onward | Each wave has a mage, ranger and melee, all of which must be isolated under the melee's dig timer. Priorities are melee, then mage, then ranger; the west pillar is irrelevant by then.24 |
| 61 | A very hard wave.3 |
| 62 | One of the hardest waves. On a bad spawn with a ranger, mager and bats, he puts on Rigor, off-ticks the ranger and mage, and does not kill the ranger to avoid a pillar stack.2526 |
| 63 | Mage, ranger, melee and two blobs (double bats in 2022). Never start it below 99 HP and be ready to rotate south.2 His default solve is to pray Augury, corner trap the melee and kill the melee.2728 In 2026: stay behind the pillar because running out is deadly, corner trap the melee, heal off the ranger, then one-tick alternate the mager and a blob.29 |
| 64 | Mage, ranger and double melee: still very dangerous, but safer than double blob waves.30 Much easier; the pillar position is the easiest solve, so go to the pillar anytime a mage is there.31 |
| 65 | Double ranger and mage: easy to solve but with the risk of a "wombo combo" spawn where both see the player at once. Get away from the mage and pray ranged.4 Pre-Augury is really important because the wave can deal about 95 damage at the start, making it the most important wave to have 99 health.32 It can potentially deal over 90, so start with Augury, but it is free if the mage is on the other side of the pillar.33 Armadyl versus crystal is preference here: Armadyl has less prayer bonus and ranged defence but more DPS, good for Zuk and triples.34 In 2026 he says two rangers together max 92, so with over 92 health they cannot kill the player, and not to pray ranged since it takes more damage than praying mage.35 |
| 66 | Double mages and effectively free: pray mage and start with only the twisted bow on.4 Kill the mages right next to each other so they do not respawn each other, and pull them together so the blowpipe can be used.36 All pillars instantly go down when the last mage dies, so do not stand next to one, and pause this wave as Jad is next.5 The wave cannot be lost; he says not to flick it and that no one has ever lost it.35 |
| 73 | Ba-Ba (the Jal-Xil spawn) arrives.37 |
Opening
The run begins by dropping a few brews and killing the first nibblers, which run to the nearest pillar and attack it.7
