Botting is a mechanic topic that Gnomonkey covers in 5 videos between 2022-06-18 and 2026-03-10. This article is a stub: his statements are grouped by type, repeated ones merged.

Stats and numbers

  • As of September 2025, Gnomonkey says the top-end moneymakers are all under 20 million GP per hour and that it is much harder to make money.1
  • Gnomonkey cites bot-driven price drops: Sunfire splinters hit a low of about 75 GP each, Colosseum was around 6M GP per hour (equal to Hydra and below Nex and Theatre of Blood), and Oathplate pieces fell to an all-time low of about 60M before recovering to about 85M.2
  • Previously the hiscores for very high-profit bosses were filled with bots, with ranks five through about fifty botted, though it looks a bit brighter now.3
  • Gnomonkey cites botted items with very low prices such as Burning claw under 5 million, Avernic treads under 200 million, and Sunfire splinters so low that the Colosseum is not worth doing on a main.4

Gnomonkey's opinion

  • Gnomonkey had a feeling Jagex would move this direction when they announced the Jagex launcher, and says this seems a very reasonable relaxation of the rules.5
  • Gnomonkey thinks the change should reduce botting populations at least temporarily since most bots run on their own botting clients, but bots still run on RuneLite so he does not expect them to go away; Jagex may detect them more easily.5
  • Gnomonkey says it is likely Jagex developed a system to detect other clients and would not be surprised if cheat client developers find ways to spoof RuneLite, starting a new war like with banning bots, though he notes it is at least a step up from before when pretty much nobody was banned for it.6
  • Gnomonkey says tradable skip tokens give a GP incentive on every clue tier, which will encourage bots to do beginner clues to help cloggers get tokens.7
  • Gnomonkey says it is very easy to get an account ready to start doing beginner clues, so bots would expand beyond medium clues to every tier.8
  • Gnomonkey says it is notable that two blogs in a row would encourage botting, and says it feels very similar to the Castle Wars change.8
  • Gnomonkey says the Solo Mission video on botting concluded there are many more bots than people thought, and that the golden age of player counts has led to a surge in botting at many locations.1
  • Gnomonkey says bots also make it hard to find worlds for content, giving the example of finding a God Wars Dungeon world, and make playing alongside highly visible bots infuriating.9
  • Gnomonkey uses a leaking-ship analogy: banning bots is like bailing water out, while the gold buyers are the holes in the hull, so Jagex should focus on buyers.10
  • Gnomonkey says during prosperous times like the current golden age it is especially important to crack down on botting, comparing it to algae covering a lake when the weather is nice.11
  • Gnomonkey says the recent botting has made all the moneymakers worse and many items nearly worthless.12
  • Gnomonkey says bots are the root of the problem and the biggest issue bringing bosses down; they go to delve 8 regardless, so placing uniques at delve 6 will not stop them bringing items in.13
  • Gnomonkey asks Jagex to devote more resources to fighting bots and to publish a news post about what it is doing, noting they have been doing extra ban waves and he believes they hired a new anti-cheat specialist.13
  • Gnomonkey asks Jagex to anticipate bot behaviour when designing content; with Yama's 1.2 times demon bane weakness, bots use a staff of the dead casting demon bane with about a 10m setup, and he has seen bots with 150m Magic XP from this.14
  • Gnomonkey says Void is incredibly good at Doom because you have 100% accuracy most of the time, Void is easy to get (bots can do Pest Control or chompy hunting), and Void with a Scorching bow is within 15% of the Twisted bow.15
  • Gnomonkey says there should be a decent gap between the cheap option and the best-in-slot option for bosses, and that Ember light being complete best-in-slot at Yama or Demon bane being very strong allows super cheap options that let bots thrive.16
  • Gnomonkey says botting rose massively during the last year, among the worst in many years, and that although ban waves have improved things and botted item prices are recovering, it is not better than prior years.17
  • Gnomonkey says real world trading and botting remain big problems, and that Jagex's anti-cheat improvements are not a strong reason to raise prices.18

Events

  • Jagex has been cracking down on botting, with a major ban wave at the end of August 2025, and that prices of heavily botted items started to come back up afterward.19
  • Bot numbers rise whenever player counts rise, and recalls that in 2007 Jagex responded to out-of-control bots by removing free trade and the Wilderness, a nuclear option he does not want repeated.20
