Demonic Brutus is the hardmode version of the cow boss Brutus. Gnomonkey calls it mechanically simple but extremely punishing, with bursts of 50 damage on mistakes.5 It was designed purely for fun, and its only reward is a pair of cosmetic bull slippers.4 He found it very fun and is glad there is no real GP gatekeeping, only a silly potato.6 He compares it in difficulty to Awakened Leviathan, probably a bit easier with the tile sets, quoting Mod Arcane in calling it both the hardest and the easiest boss Jagex has added.62

Requirements

Brutus is found in the Lumbridge Cowpen after the short free-to-play quest Ides of Milk.1 To fight the hard mode, the player must pick potatoes at the Scar near the tent seen during Desert Treasure II; they regrow every few seconds and one must be fed to the cow per attempt, like Awakener's orbs.1 Invisible walls block the arena, so the player cannot run away.6 The boss cannot be drained, venomed, poisoned or thralled.2

The fight

After two to three melee attacks, which chip for very small amounts through melee prayer, the boss chooses a special attack.5

  • Dash: the cow creates three clones, then charges from a different direction, rotating clockwise every game tick.5
  • Stomp: three clones stomp in a clockwise pattern each tick.7
  • The dash and stomp specials always alternate.7

At 67 percent HP the boss starts specials a tick faster and reveals the clones one at a time instead of all at once.7 At 34 percent or lower the patterns reverse to counterclockwise.7

Phase two

After the first kill the boss heals to 65 percent and returns to clockwise rotations. Each special now also fires a protection prayer orb that must be prayed against while dodging, like the Manticore in the Colosseum, and at 34 percent it reverses to counterclockwise again.7 The boss always does three melee attacks first; the example orbs were mage, range, mage, melee, then mage, melee, ranged, ranged. Missing an orb does not hit hard, but the stomps hurt.8

Dodging

A tile set (credit to Wide) marks the dodge positions. If the boss starts its first special with a stomp over blue one, the player has the blue rotation; a dash over pink two gives the pink rotation. The patterns are identical either way, with the camera rotated so tile four is at the top.9 The player stays on the middle tile of the plus sign and dodges all specials in a clockwise diamond. Gnomonkey recommends dodging in a straight line away from the boss first, then doing the diamond.1011

Special Instructions (pink start)
Dash, clockwise Click tile one as the boss rears up, then through two, three and four every tick10
Stomp, clockwise Starts on tile three: click to tile one immediately, tile two as he rears up, wait an extra tick for the three stomp, then back to four12
Next dash After a stomp starting on three the next dash starts on tile four; this must be tick perfect13
Dash, reverse Click tile one, then toward the boss onto two, three and four every tick13
Stomp, reverse Dodge to tile one, wait two cow cycles, then swap to tile three for the final two stomps14

Below 33 percent the dodge goes away from the boss and then toward it, counterclockwise.15

Strategy

Best in slot is a Scythe with full Oathplate and Bellator ring; the spec weapons are Burning claws and Chally, and the boss is weak to slash.2 Gnomonkey opens with Scythe, then Burning claws, then Chally, and says this always works well.16 He thinks Burning claws are the best spec weapon because the burn does not clear on phase transition, though the Void Waker could be better, and Gearscape was not updated at the time.2 He lands three hits and fits the Chally spec as the final hit just before the boss's fourth attack.11 When food is needed, do one more swing and combo before eating, so food is not wasted during the specials.17 An example max gear kill took 2 minutes 22 seconds.18

Budget cheese

In phase two the first orb is always mage, so pray mage for the first orb and then swap to ranged regardless of what is shown, while dodging away from the boss. Eat a piece of food, such as an angler, as each special starts so no attack ticks are wasted. Praying range only takes the player from full to around 54-72 HP, with orb hits maxing around 20. As long as the stomps are dodged, phase two can be brute forced this way with a combo eat when needed.192021

Gnomonkey's kills

He got the world's second kill on release day, and the kill ends abruptly when the boss dies; he was surprised he won, having thought there would be more.32 At one point the boss gave an extra attack that threw him off, and he was not yet below 35 percent health at one stage.22 He plans a 1 HP Dharok kill and other challenges and has done blindfolded and Dharok bombing runs.64
