Sulliuscep (mushroom trees) on Fossil Island are, in Gnomonkey's words, one of the most rewarding methods of Woodcutting training.4 They are more AFK than non-tick-manipulated teak trees, give over 100k Woodcutting XP an hour and more profit than AFK yew trees, and are the best source of fossils in the game.42 He recommends them from level 65 to 90, saying they do not get enough love as they are very AFK with very good XP.2
Requirements
Chopping needs a minimum of 65 Woodcutting, and high Prayer and Hitpoints are very useful.1 Skillers cannot realistically use the method because spine mushrooms always deal ten damage on a hit, and a tar monster's max hit is 11, so at least 12 HP is needed.12 He recommends getting the Lumberjack outfit before training Woodcutting past this level, and says Preserve increases chop rates quite a bit.1
Gear and inventory
The gear goal is to maximise Woodcutting XP and prayer bonus: full Lumberjack outfit, a trimmed skillcape for prayer bonus (he wears the crafting cape for bank teleport), an Ardougne cloak 4 for more prayer bonus if owned, an infernal axe (a dragon axe is effectively the same since mushrooms are not burnt), and the best prayer bonus gear for other slots.6 A desert amulet 4 restores stats between trips; without it bring home teleport tabs, a construction cape or a ring of dueling. A Hitpoints skillcape and regen bracelet are smart since the player is damaged often.6
Inventory: numulite (received in large amounts and simply kept), a rake to remove vines blocking the path, antipoison because spine mushrooms poison for 5 damage, and exactly seven sharks, since by the seventh shark he has typically run out of Prayer and ends the trip.7 Trips also end early when the player carries too many fossils, and dixite pendants are needed to teleport back to Fossil Island.3
Method
- Teleport to Fossil Island (if not unlocked, use a dixite pendant on the strange machine in the mansion). On the first run, run to the swamp in the south-east and jump on the mushroom; the first landing deals half the player's health, and clicking the magic mushtree unlocks the teleport.3
- Before moving on, place nine bittercap mushrooms in the pit landed in to prevent fall damage; it needs nine more every time the player lands.8
- Each sulliuscep can be chopped for a random number of mushrooms before it falls, then moves to a different location in a set pattern; the route through the swamp is always the same.8
- Keep Preserve on at all times while chopping and use the special attack.8
- After a run of seven trees he picks up at least nine bittercap mushrooms before jumping on the rubber cap mushrooms to start another run. When done, he teleports out, restores stats, banks fossils, teleports back and uses the magic mushtree to reach the sticky swamp.5
Hazards and loot
- Tar bubbles in the swamp turn into tar monsters (a max of seven); simply run past them, since distracting them with hoop snakes is a huge waste of time.9
- Spine mushrooms randomly attack the player as they run past, dealing ten damage and poisoning, so drink an antidote when hit.9
- Drop bittercap mushrooms and mortmyre fungus as they are not worth much; keep fossils.9
- Sulliuscep caps occasionally drop, worth about 1,500 GP; they are the only mushroom he keeps, are used for mushroom pies and can be dropped to extend trips.10
- He hops worlds if another player appears. Mushrooms are client side so are not reduced, but tar monsters are more likely to spawn, and he finds it surprising Jagex added a sulliuscep world when it is competitive.10
Rates and fossils
The method can pull 100 to 110k Woodcutting XP an hour with full attention, while Gnomonkey, who likes AFK, typically gets around 80k.5 A later video states up to 100k an hour.2 Going from level 65 to 90 takes 38,559 mushrooms chopped.2
Fossils turn in to the museum for XP lamps, giving free Runecrafting XP, and completing the fossil exhibits gives 120k XP in lamps in any skill; starting at level 65 the player finishes them with fossils left over.22 A seven-tree run typically gives about two to three fossils, once ten in one run, whereas his footage got only two from about fifty trees, which he calls incredibly unlucky.4
