Gnomonkey's Fortis Colosseum setup is the gear, inventory and switch layout he uses to clear the Fortis Colosseum. It is built around a Scythe of Vitur used for the entire run, a Saradomin godsword for health and prayer, six brews with divine and restore potions, and almost no ranged switches, because skipping them frees inventory slots for potions and his strategy does not need them71. The aim is a 50 max hit with the Scythe; he says everything in his layout is required to reach it23.
His position moved between March and July 2024. In March he considered Torva one of the few places where the armour makes a massive difference, but by July he said it is not needed and that the Scythe should be bought first58.
Gear and max hit
The target is a 50 Scythe max. Gnomonkey wants max melee rather than Echo boots or camping Ankle eggs, since that is what reaches 50; dropping to 49 lowers the second Scythe hit from 25 to 242. His cape also reaches a 50 max9. Without an Ultor ring the setup is at a much larger disadvantage3.
For the melee budget setup he gives the max hit as about 51, notes that the Avernic defender is not actually a max hit upgrade, and rates the Saradomin sword as slightly better than a whip6.
Armour
The longer the boss takes to kill, the harder the Colosseum is, and in March he said Torva makes a massive difference here because of its defence5. He starts waves in Torva for its high defence, replacing some inventory slots with brews10. His setup has 385 range defence, which makes rotating pillar stacks not a big deal5. He starts waves with about 300 range defence in his cape setup, against about 170 for an ink top9. With a crystal shield the setup has 367 ranged defence, which he calls about as tanky as Torva casting with the Shadow6.
By July 2024 he said Torva is not required, and that Justiciar and Bandos are probably fine. He advises getting the Scythe before Torva because the Scythe matters much more8.
Rings
The Bellator ring is better than the alternatives when Ultor is unavailable, and he wears it rather than the Lightbearer in the melee budget setup311. He calls the Bellator ring very close to Ultor and much cheaper, and the Berserker ring also fine. A Lightbearer should not be brought because the player melees the whole time and needs a melee ring8.
Tank shield
For rotating pillar stacks that go badly, which usually force at least one pillar swap, he brings Ellie (the Elidinis' ward)12. A Falador shield gives some defence and a lot of prayer, and the thrall book with an extra brew or restore is another option12. He also wears a crystal shield as the tank shield and starts waves with it on6.
Weapons
| Weapon | Role |
|---|---|
| Scythe of Vitur | Best-in-slot melee weapon for the whole run1 |
| Saradomin godsword | Sustain; can spec the Fremennik ranger, and gives health and prayer because it is a guaranteed max hit1 |
| Dragon warhammer | Carried in because it is very good on the boss and one-handed, so with a Book of the Dead it saves a slot; the one place he still uses a warhammer13 |
| Venator bow | The only ranged weapon in the max-budget setup7 |
| Burning claws | Very good DPS, allowing DPS specs through the waves14 |
| Osmumten's fang | Optional; better DPS than the Scythe on the shamans, but not needed15 |
The Elder maul is not a slot save because it is two-handed, so he considers the Dragon warhammer better in the Colosseum1316. Being able to DPS spec helps with the boss and with killing quickly because of the reinforcement mechanic15.
Downgrades are cheap. The mace is the same as the rapier and the "Saildoor" alternative apart from two extra prayer bonus, so it can be swapped for either12. A Soulreaper axe is a fine downgrade at about 10% worse than the Scythe, though recent changes make stacks refund slower and refund health, and a tentacle whip or a mace with ink is nearly as good17. Barrows gloves are not a worthwhile swap for mage or range, since the Atlatl and Trident hits are guaranteed max regardless of accuracy18.
Saradomin godsword
Gnomonkey begs players, Ironmen included, to get a Saradomin godsword. He calls it 40 free health for 50% spec and one of the most important items in the setup, and says getting through the Colosseum without a Blood fury or a Saradomin godsword is trolling4.
Mage and range handling
The max-budget setup has no ranged weapons and no range switches except the Venator bow7. The Venator bow kills the Fremennik mage and one-shots him if the player bounces off the ranged Fremennik after killing the melee one14. In full melee gear with Piety, the Fremennik mage dies in two shots from a Venator bow equivalent; he calls the Venator bow an equal side-grade, with a blowpipe taking three shots, so buying one is not a concern19.
For the one-shot on the Fremennik mage he first needed a three-way mage setup plus a Saturated heart rather than the four-way mage used before, with no Augury; this is the best possible setup but the heart is expensive1. Later in the run he found a four-way mage with Augury, or a five-way mage without Augury, enough to one-shot the Fremennik berserker, which is less mandatory than he had thought. The heart should always be hit so the one-shot does not fail20.
Without a Tumeken's shadow, the Sanguinesti staff two-shots the Fremennik berserker rather than one-shotting it (roughly 8 ticks versus the Shadow's 5), heals the player and can pull blood runes. The Trident also two-shots and pulls runes but does not heal21.
Nobody should bring a range switch such as Crystal and Bofa to a first Colosseum. He compares it to bringing Justin, a crutch, to a first Inferno, and advises embracing pillar stacks and using the slots for potions16.
Inventory and runes
The inventory holds six brews, divines and restores1. Gnomonkey uses the Charge calculator plugin and sets 20 as the amount he refills his Shadow with, giving 40 soul runes, which is enough for the entire Colosseum; he drops two brews and uncharges the Shadow at the start22. He also drops items at the start, such as runes (about 19600 soul runes worth) and chaos runes for casting, and starts wave one on a tile similar to B523. At wave start he swaps in Torva-level defence by replacing inventory slots with brews10.
Gearscape is his suggestion for checking any gear question; he calls it very UI friendly17.
