PvM skill pillars is a mechanic topic that Gnomonkey covers in 1 video on 2022-05-11. This article is a stub: his statements are grouped by type, repeated ones merged.

Methods

  • Gnomonkey calls inventory management, movement and prayer management the three main pillars of PvM skill; they are not all-encompassing but cover the majority of skills you can acquire.1
  • Gnomonkey adds a secret fourth pillar called 'rhythm': an understanding of attack cycles and the tick system in general.2

Stats and numbers

  • As an extreme example, Gnomonkey says full Armadyl is typically only a 0.5% DPS increase over Blessed dragonhide at 80m for the set.3
  • Old School RuneScape is a rhythm game at 100 beats per minute (0.6 seconds per beat), which matters at every encounter, scaling or bossing.2

Tips

  • Rhythm cannot be learned at one specific place; it is gradual, and even tick-manipulation skilling methods can carry over to PvM. Examples where people say you 'just need to get a rhythm' include Verzik tanking, Xarpus scythe walking, Olm cycles and 3-tick 4-granite.2

Gnomonkey's opinion

  • Gnomonkey says higher-level PvM is often touted as very difficult to get into, but with the right attitude, gear and resources learning PvM is usually just a matter of jumping in.4
  • Gnomonkey says stats are far greater for DPS than gear 99% of the time: each Strength level is roughly a 1-2% DPS increase depending on whether it gives a max hit, and the same applies to Ranged and Magic.5
  • Gnomonkey says not training stats in Nightmare Zone to decent levels before PvM is 'griefing' yourself and your teammates because they are such simple stats to train.5
