Leagues 6: Demonic Pacts is a Leagues season built around a huge pact skill tree. Gnomonkey considers the tree one of its best features, a very cool system for combat, and recommends the season to people on the fence3. He believes it was worth playing and not a waste of time, because the tree gives Jagex many avenues to test items and ideas that provide value to the main game, even though some are bummed about two seasonal modes in one year (Deadman and Leagues)5. It is not his favourite Leagues: he prefers Raging Echoes for its endgame potential with Echo Sol and more impactful Echo weapons6.
The pact tree
The tree is much deeper than past Leagues, where the approach was to shove points into one style, and he says it feels like playing old Diablo7. There are about 10 different minor builds, including a light weapon spec melee build and a thorns melee build that makes enemies damage themselves8. Builds should all be viable for most end-game content, with some tuned to specific content, such as a clip of a thorns build AFKing the six Jad challenge7. Building teammates into different builds for different roles is a cool part of raiding9.
| Branch | Effect |
|---|---|
| Earth magic | Drains defence and adds damage based on the defence drained10 |
| Fire magic | Ricochets to other enemies10. The ricochet damage is typeless, and one fire mage can clear the entire Nylocas room in Theatre of Blood9 |
| Water magic | Heals a lot, up to about 180 total hitpoints10 |
| Air magic | Full maxes every hit with enough prayer bonus10 |
| Ranged | Crossbows are guaranteed to max hit but much slower; double chin builds throw faster10 |
His own build uses a seven-tile halberd, the same range as a ring crossbow, which gives a damage and accuracy bonus at full max range11, and a blind bag, which gives a chance to pull a heavy weapon from the inventory and swing it with one-tick attack speed on every attack11. Melee attacks have a chance to trigger ranged damage echo splats; because he specced into the ranged tree these cascade into more ranged splats, producing procs on procs8. He planned a stream to kill Zuk through his healers with this melee build and halberd12.
Earning points
Points are unlocked by doing specific tasks in each region, ranging from easy ones, like killing a troll in Asgarnia, to extremely hard ones13. Some final-tier tasks were extremely long, such as full Oathplate in Kourend, or ranger boots in Asgarnia (about 200 medium clues), while the Kandarin final task was easier13. Some tier tasks need 25 Chambers of Xeric and 25 Theatre of Blood completions for a single point2.
Update one week after launch
Jagex released changes one week after launch1:
- Four bonus points were added, so 44 points are obtainable for a cap of 40, letting players skip some tasks2.
- Easier point tasks were added, such as equipping a piece of Moons armour or an obby cape14.
- Many neutral nodes were buffed with more accuracy and prayer penetration, and percent damage nodes now also give accuracy14.
- The Flask relic, which was bugged against bosses in walls such as Ulm and Verzik, was fixed so it works on everything15.
- The quiver extra slot, which would not regenerate ammo and broke the ranged tree and crystal blessing crossbow builds, was fixed on the day of the video16.
- A Morytania task requiring the ectophial was auto-finished17.
Relics
He thinks the relics were solid compared to the last Leagues, with no obviously wrong choice like Fairy's flight in Raging Echoes18. Butler's Bell versus Transmute was a big discussion point because both were very good, and the clue relic remains very good for getting points19. His only regret was his tier eight pick of the Minion relic, which picks up loot, has damage boosted by giving it Zamorak items and can do AoE19; he took it because the Flask relic was bugged15. The Flask relic has tech where stalling with NPC Contact extends the invincibility frames, allowing maze skips and repeated hits on Bloat while invincible15.
Bugs
He says Leagues 6 was probably the buggiest Leagues, with really annoying bugs20, though he credits Jagex for fixing basically all of the ones he listed, even if it sucks to take a week21. Problems included:
- Total level achievements not unlocking for several days, apparently because Sailing was stuck at level one22.
- The Transmute relic, meant to auto-transform resources every five ticks, stopping whenever the player did anything else such as chopping, fishing or mining23.
- Many regions not unlocking the Slayer tasks they should. He skipped around 2,000 points of tasks trying to get Hydras, which appeared only after telling the Slayer master he would do hard tasks, at combat level 12124.
- Many tasks bugged, such as chopping about a thousand redwood logs for the 'chop 250 redwood logs into shafts' task, a free 200 point task, which never completed25.
- Players reported very low drop rates at deep delves of the Doom of Mokhaiotl; he could not confirm this and only did delves one through eight17.
- Perdu is not in every region, so without him there was no way to get the ectophial in Morytania. He says Perdu should always be in a Leagues starting area, and that getting the Ivandis flail was much harder without him1725.
Opinion
- He thinks Jagex should always stick with a skill-tree system for future Leagues, since it adds complexity, strategy, engagement and player choice26.
- He has minor balance nitpicks, finding some trees weaker than others, and says Jagex clearly had an idea how players would spec26.
- He sees Leagues as a free opportunity to experiment with systems such as a thorns piece of equipment or ricocheting magic, which could become future raid rewards27.
- Leagues 6 is much slower than previous Leagues: it took him three days to finish his halberd and begin the melee build. The slower pace grows on him because decisions matter more and feel more rewarding28, and it helped him benefit from the bug fixes unlike in the last Leagues21.
- He finds the questing very tedious and hopes the next Leagues lets players bypass quests, like the buyable quest unlocks in Shattered Relics. He was annoyed that the quest for Echo Moxie, the first Echo boss, was required, and that Sins of the Father was required for several pact points2930.
- He predicts the next Leagues will be the best ever, because Jagex spent so much effort on the pact tree that it dropped other focuses like Echo bosses and an uber endgame boss like Yama31.
Infinite Jad challenge
Players can set self-imposed challenges, and Gnomonkey chose killing 1,000 Jads in a row4. The Leagues Discord has a prize for the most Jads killed, but he is disqualified because he joined after Leagues had started4. He had originally planned a thorns build after finishing with the blind bag32. He used no mage because he lacks the regions that would suit the challenge; ideally a water mage tank build would kill Jads faster32. The tier 8 Minion relic is the only relic he considers relevant, as the minion can automatically tag most of the healers33. Completing the run rewarded 39,470 total Leagues points (toggle reward)34, and at the rate of the run he would need only 26 hours of Jads to get his onyx34.
