Opinion: Rubium mining design is an opinion topic that Gnomonkey covers in 2 videos between 2026-05-22 and 2026-05-26. This article is a stub: his statements are grouped by type, repeated ones merged.
Methods
- Gnomonkey's alternative design is that every mine gives some stackable splinters plus a deposit that fills your inventory, which you take to a forge-like station in the cave and break down for extra splinters, as with Baronite; players tick manipulating would simply drop the deposits.1
- Gnomonkey suggests Jagex could add super granite rocks requiring 80 Sailing on an island that yield only XP at roughly 150k or more per hour while still dropping every rock, with higher requirements but the same method.2
- Gnomonkey proposes that each Rubium mine also yield a Rubium geode alongside the splinters; players could drop the geodes for raw XP or take them to an anvil elsewhere in the cave to break them down for a big chunk of splinters.3
Gnomonkey's opinion
- Gnomonkey says his alternative would give a high-intensity 1.5-tick option that drops lots of resources while AFK players get extra splinters from breaking deposits down, making a more variable and interesting scaling method like an intensive granite for a useful resource.4
- Gnomonkey says he would like both options to exist but does not hate making Rubium AFK and does not think the change is horrible, since Jagex had to do something balance-wise.5
- Gnomonkey rejects the common Reddit claim that Jagex is ruining the game by discouraging tick manipulation or that tick manipulation holds back methods, calling it not reality.6
- Gnomonkey considers it okay for Sailing to unlock a method better than Granite as long as the requirements are reasonable; he suggests 60 Sailing and between 70 and 80 Mining, which would make Rubium just a more relaxed Granite.7
- Gnomonkey says that at the original requirements players would never do Granite, and it would be healthier to use Granite until about 70 to 80 Mining and move to Rubium later after doing some Sailing.8
- Gnomonkey thinks requiring higher Mining for a useful resource like Rubium makes sense in game logic, and does not see why Jagex turns Rubium into a Motherlode Mine style AFK method with worse XP and barely any of the useful resource.9
- Gnomonkey says turning Rubium into a roughly five-second-AFK method like Motherlode Mine adds nothing, since methods like that exist for Mining everywhere and Motherlode Mine already exists.10
- Gnomonkey says it was an opportunity to add a mining method more interesting than Granite, with higher requirements or a slightly more intensive method, to justify the same XP.10
- Gnomonkey says the geode idea would keep tick manipulation, which then requires dropping items and raises actions per minute, while still letting AFK players break geodes down, so both play styles could be served.11
- Gnomonkey says Jagex chose to please neither group, since AFK players and tick manipulators are both unhappy, and that supporting both would only need more effort.12
Events
- Jagex said it is aware many players would like more high-level mining XP methods in the future and is interested in exploring them.13
