Opinion: Power creep in OSRS is an opinion topic that Gnomonkey covers in 3 videos between 2025-02-04 and 2026-02-17. This article is a stub: his statements are grouped by type, repeated ones merged.
Gnomonkey's opinion
- Gnomonkey says Jagex is so afraid of power creep that nothing can be added to the game anymore, and that the dev team seems crippled with fear.1
- Gnomonkey argues that any extra option for a PvM encounter makes the game at least a little easier, so Jagex is trying to avoid giving extremely difficult bosses proper rewards to curb power creep a little longer.2
- Gnomonkey says too much power creep is a bad thing and RuneScape 3 has it, since every update adds three new best-in-slot weapons from every boss, but he says Jagex has gone to the opposite extreme of allowing roughly 2% DPS increase wiggle room per update.3
- Gnomonkey says a little power creep at a boss of high difficulty that deserves good rewards is not just fine but absolutely necessary, because the boss will have no draw without rewards.4
- Gnomonkey says he got criticized in comments by people who want Tumeken's shadow to be ultra powerful, and questions why Shadow overtaking ZCB at Nex is fine but a potion that gives 25% spec every five minutes is not.5
- Gnomonkey says RS3 has similar potions and a lot of power creep, but resembling RS3 is not a reason to keep Surge potions out of the game.6
- Gnomonkey says he likes that players are concerned about powerful things that benefit them, but wishes they would check the numbers.7
- Gnomonkey says a little power creep is actually good for the game.8
- Gnomonkey says OSRS needs a bit of both horizontal progression and power creep, and does not do what RuneScape 3 did by adding new best weapons for every style with each piece of content and making everything else irrelevant; for example the Abyssal whip is still used in OSRS.9
- Gnomonkey says older weapons that were end game 10 years ago can be mid game weapons now, as long as they remain in the meta somewhere.10
- Gnomonkey says bosses need good rewards; Phosani's Nightmare is a difficult boss but nothing it drops matters that much.10
- Gnomonkey thinks the Oathplate from Yama was a little too much, as it is best-in-slot melee armor at most places over Torva, from a boss that is not insanely difficult to access or beat.11
- Gnomonkey thinks Blood Moon Rises is in a good spot because it pushes one style's power but does not massively shift balance or change weapon choice at many bosses; he says raids are the place to turn the game upside down.12
- Gnomonkey says nearly every item Jagex adds now devalues something else (like Seeker arrows devaluing Scythe in the Colosseum) because there are so many items, and it is time to push the game to a new level.13
- Gnomonkey says the two problems are that Jagex has added too many items and has not raised the ceiling on bosses enough, so more bosses where gear matters are needed.14
- Gnomonkey says power creep is only a problem if the PvM ecosystem does not support it; as long as Jagex keeps adding bosses at all levels that give new items use cases, it works fine.15
Trivia
- A Reddit post cited by Gnomonkey claims Thralls at the Colosseum do enough damage to kill three javelin Colossi by themselves over an 18-minute run.16
