Opinion: Magic gear for bossing is an opinion topic that Gnomonkey covers in 1 video on 2020-07-11. This article is a stub: his statements are grouped by type, repeated ones merged.
Methods
- Gnomonkey's basic boss mage setup is the slayer setup but with Mystic robes instead of Proselyte and a Trident of the seas instead of the Ancient staff.1
Stats and numbers
- A Seers ring at 300k gives +12 magic accuracy and adds about another 5% DPS.2
- Wizard boots are literally a 0.07% DPS increase at this point, so Gnomonkey mentions Eternal boots at 3.9M, which are only +5 magic attack over Mystic boots for about a 0.35% DPS increase.3
- Ancestral robes at 155M are an incredibly small DPS upgrade unless they give a max hit; getting a max hit is about a 3% DPS upgrade, and the full set at level 99 gives two max hits for about 6%.4
Tips
- Gnomonkey typically buys Ancestral in order of hat, top, then bottom, but it depends on the content, and the Chambers of Xeric have different configurations.4
Gnomonkey's opinion
- For general bossing such as Zulrah and the Olm in the Chambers of Xeric, Gnomonkey's priorities are magic damage first, magic accuracy second and prayer bonus third, with his DPS calculations done against Zulrah.5
- The first boss mage purchase is again a Book of Darkness at about 500k, which is about a 5% DPS upgrade over no shield and gives +5 prayer, with magic accuracy even more important than in the slayer setup.1
- Next Gnomonkey buys a Trident of the swamp at 4.1M, a massive upgrade of about 15% DPS not counting the chance to venom; he notes weapon upgrades are always the biggest, and it has a 200 gp higher cast cost that is worth paying.2
- Next are Ahrim's robes at 4.4M, about a 1.5% DPS upgrade with 17 magic attack and significantly higher defences; Gnomonkey says to skip the hood since it gives no DPS increase and is not worth the repair costs.6
- Next Gnomonkey saves up for a Tormented bracelet at 17M, which adds +4 magic attack and 5% magic damage and brings DPS up about 3.5%.3
- Next Gnomonkey would buy an Arcane spirit shield at about 150M, which loses two prayer bonus but gives +20 magic attack and significant melee and ranged defence, and is about 0.6% better DPS than the Book of Darkness.7
- Gnomonkey skips the other shields because they lose the +5 prayer of the Book of Darkness, he cannot think of situations needing melee defence while maging, and in the Chambers of Xeric you typically camp at the Tome of Fire.7
