The Jad Challenge is PvM content released in March 2021 for players who have completed the Inferno2. It is a series of six challenges that put the player against 1 to 6 Jads at once. Gnomonkey considers 4 Jads and under fairly simple with some attempts, so his guide focuses on 5 and 6 Jads as by far the hardest challenges4. He says strategy only helps so much, and that what matters is throwing attempt after attempt until the prayer timings are down5.
Requirements and rewards
A fire cape unlocks the first two challenges (1 Jad and 2 Jads); the next four, from 3 to 6 Jads, require an infernal cape2. The 1 and 2 Jad challenges are good for players who want to get more comfortable with the Inferno Jads2. Completing the 6 Jad challenge unlocks a transmog that turns Jad pets into the Inferno variant, and the challenges also give some tokkul for challenges completed2.
Gear and supplies
Supplies are not really the worry, so the aim is the best ranged DPS gear available3. Gnomonkey's recommended gear is max ranged: Armadyl, Pegasian boots, Anguish, Barrows gloves and dragon arrows. God d'hide can be used as a downgrade and the completion is still easily possible3. He highly recommends a twisted bow for 6 Jad, and says it is definitely possible with just a toxic blowpipe but much harder1. Elite void ranged is around 4% worse DPS than Armadyl against Jad because of Jad's high defence, and gives worse defence, so he does not recommend void3.
At 99 Prayer, the inventory for 5 Jad and under needs around three prayer potions plus a Divine ranging potion, with the rest being the best food and optionally some chinchompas3. For 6 Jad he adds another prayer potion to be safe, and says one extra anglerfish can be the difference maker6.
A Divine ranging or Bastion potion and anglerfish up to 121 HP can be pre-potted before entering4. An imbued heart can also be pre-potted since it resets every attempt, but he says it makes a very small difference for tanking Jad's magic hits4.
Chinchompas
Chinchompas are great for tagging healers but very difficult to use before one or two of the Jads have been killed in harder modes; Gnomonkey tags healers with his twisted bow personally6. They speed things up significantly and are basically necessary with a blowpipe. The type does not matter, and since grey and red chinchompas had similar prices in March 2021, he says red chins were probably best6.
Strategy
Anything that reduces the number of clicks helps dramatically7. For 5 and 6 Jad, he highly recommends re-entering without pre-potting for a while to practise the prayer timings4. The Jads in the lower challenges have spaced-out, relatively normal attack cycles4.
Taking hits
If the player is overhealed, Jad cannot one-shot them. Gnomonkey says it is absolutely possible to take Jad hits, as he took multiple in his successful run, and what matters is how they are handled7. After a hit, the player should not panic: eat an anglerfish in between Jad cycles, repeat until back to stable health, then click back on Jad and refocus on prayer switching7. On an unlucky spawn where several healers attack the player, healing may be needed while killing the starting Jads7.
5 and 6 Jad
Six Jad is much simpler than five in layout but much harder anyway, because from the north Jad all the way around to the northwest Jad there is no delay between attacks8. Prayer must be switched on each tick an attack comes out. Gnomonkey waits for a Jad's projectile to be on screen before switching, and if the Jads are alternating the next prayer can be clicked as soon as the prayer activates8. The only time other actions are really possible is after the northwest Jad's attack at the end of a full cycle, when there are two ticks before the next Jad's attack is fired9.
Five Jads is barely any easier than six, since there is still tick-perfect timing for five attacks with just one extra tick between cycles10.
Records
In Gnomonkey's 6 Jad run he tanked several Jad hits, including one for 98 while healers were also attacking him, healed up carefully when possible and still completed the challenge11.
