Summary
Gnomonkey fights the Whisperer twice in his 'Wiki Guides' series: first with the OSRS Wiki's worst-allowed mage downgrades (Infinity hat, Amulet of power, etc.), then with a budget setup from the Gearscape tool. The worst-gear kill took 448.6 seconds and the budget setup about 3:50, which he found a smaller gain than the stat difference suggested. He also criticises the wiki's downgrades as unrealistic for accounts with Desert Treasure 2 done.

Topics covered
Whisperer
- (0:00) The Whisperer requires the grandmaster quest Desert Treasure 2, which Gnomonkey says should make many low-tier gear downgrades irrelevant.
- (1:23) In Gnomonkey's setup the powered staff has nine tile range, the same as a Sanguinesti staff or Toxic trident, so he did not need freezes.
- (1:23) Gnomonkey uses a powered staff on the Whisperer so he can use thralls, and drinks forgotten brews for a 10 magic level boost.
- (1:23) Gnomonkey uses the Rune thrownaxe special attack to kill the Whisperer's Lost Souls.
- (3:14) Gnomonkey says the Whisperer's attack that bounces back only hits two targets rather than all three.
- (3:24) Gnomonkey says awakening sanity loss is more concerning than the Whisperer's damage, and the end of the fight is the only scary part.
- (6:54) In the budget setup Gnomonkey's expected time to kill was 140 seconds, which the calculator says should be about two and a half minutes without downtime.
- (7:30) Gnomonkey says the Whisperer is a boring boss in general and that it feels slow without Shadow, since the boss is balanced around having Shadow.
- (8:31) Gnomonkey ranks the Whisperer roughly third among the Desert Treasure 2 bosses, saying Duke Sucellus is definitely worse.
- (9:45) Gnomonkey finds the Whisperer's reduced damage taken while it does its special attack to be what makes the fight annoying.
- (10:30) Gnomonkey suggests mage gear helps little against the Whisperer because there is so much downtime on the boss, so mage just does not do well here until you have Shadow.
Wiki Guides challenge series
- (0:00) In this episode Gnomonkey fights the Whisperer using the worst possible gear downgrades listed on the OSRS Wiki's Whisperer page.
- (0:29) The wiki's Whisperer downgrades include Infinity hat and Farseer, a prayer mitre as a downgrade for the Farseer helmet, an Amulet of power instead of a glory, a skill cape instead of a Mage Arena 1 cape, a combat bracelet instead of Barrows gloves, Wizard boots and a Seers ring.
- (0:55) Gnomonkey notes the wiki lists Mage's book as a downgrade to Malediction ward even though Mage's book is more expensive and harder to obtain.
- (1:49) Gnomonkey says the wiki's highest-tier Whisperer gear is fairly accurate (Slayer helm or Ancestral, max mage, Shadow, Eternal boots, Torm, Magus), though Eldritch nightmare staff special over a Cursed sceptre is questionable.
- (7:34) Gnomonkey says the point of the series is not to attack the wiki, and that some people were offended; he says it is a fun series meant to shed light on bad downgrade entries so the wiki can clean them up.
- (9:38) The first Whisperer kill in the wiki's worst downgraded gear took 448.6 seconds (about 7:28), which Gnomonkey calls not that bad all considered.
Whisperer
- (0:29) Gnomonkey's downgraded setup has a max hit of 26 on the Whisperer with an Amulet of power, and the amulet's effect decays instantly.
- (5:14) Gnomonkey used the Gearscape budget tool with a 9 million gp budget; its setup uses void mage and Infinity boots and reaches a max hit of 38 after boosting.
- (5:29) Gnomonkey was surprised the budget tool recommends Infinity boots (about 400k) and a Sears ring, but says accuracy matters so the choice is plausible.
- (5:38) Gnomonkey says Moon (Lunar-themed) gear is turning out more okay than he expected, and that it is very cheap and great for budgets.
- (7:37) Gnomonkey notes the Gearscape budget tool lets you export the generated setup straight to a bank tab.
- (9:30) The wiki's worst downgrade setup had a mage attack bonus of 143 and a 38 max hit; Gnomonkey says the budget setup had about 50% more magic accuracy and 50% higher max hit.
- (9:46) The budget setup killed the Whisperer in about 3 minutes 50 seconds, roughly a minute faster and about 20% faster than the worst-gear kill, whereas Gnomonkey expected about two minutes saved.
- (9:58) Gnomonkey says that despite the budget setup having 13 extra max hits, the improvement was smaller than he expected, and speculates bad gear is just bad at the Whisperer.
Opinion: OSRS Wiki gear recommendations
- (12:30) Gnomonkey says the wiki's Desert Treasure 2 boss pages recommend downgrades such as Amulet of power or a God mitre when a Farseer helm is missing, which he calls insane for account progression.
- (13:00) Gnomonkey criticises the wiki for listing Mage's book as a downgrade to Malediction ward and a combat bracelet when Barrows gloves are not owned on an account with Desert Treasure 2 done.
- (13:27) Gnomonkey says some wiki downgrades are reasonable: the boot recommendations (an account might lack them) and the Seers ring make sense.
- (13:27) Gnomonkey says listing a Mage Arena 1 cape as not the minimum is silly because an account with Desert Treasure 2 unlocked would have to be a maniac not to own a regular god cape.
Gearscape
- (6:54) Gearscape gives an expected time to kill (140 seconds for his budget setup on the Whisperer), which excludes downtime and specials.
- (7:37) Gnomonkey says Gearscape's budget tool can find the best setup for a given budget and export it as a bank tab.
- (7:59) Gnomonkey calls the DPS calculator he uses (Gearscape) the best calculator available and says it is even better than the Oblivion spreadsheet and has replaced everything else.
