Summary

Gnomonkey reviews the April 2024 Fortis Colosseum invocation update from Jagex: Bees, Doom, the new Manti Mayhem, Myopia, Relentless, Totemic, and his suggestions for Frailty, Re-entry, Volatility, loot and glory. Overall he likes the update and thinks it rebalanced invocations and offered better choices rather than nerfing them too hard, but he lists many remaining hiccups and hopes Jagex gives Colosseum further updates.

Topics covered

Update: Colosseum invocation rebalance

  • (0:00) Gnomonkey was worried Jagex would not change Colosseum in a timely manner and was glad that, after community pushing, they changed the invocations; overall he thinks it was a pretty great update with only some issues.
  • (0:00) Gnomonkey says that from the wording of Mod Sarney's original tweet it sounded like many of the changes would make several invocations completely free, and he is happy with the direction actually taken.
  • (0:31) Most Colosseum invocations stayed the same in the update apart from a tweak to Blasphemy so it does not trade your own self-damage items like divine potions or the Soul Reaper axe.
  • (10:03) Gnomonkey says the update is less free than he expected, that he is glad Jagex did not nerf the invocations too hard and make the content too easy because it would never be fixed back with the masses complaining.
  • (10:03) Gnomonkey worries this is the last update for Colosseum, which would leave it like Tombs of Amascut, full of potential but left sitting there purely for the cape.

Bees invocation

  • (0:39) The update increased the Bees invocation's time between movement from 7 ticks to 12 ticks and its respawn delay from 18 ticks (about 11 seconds) to 50 ticks (30 seconds).
  • (0:39) Gnomonkey says Bees is still not viable because it makes you waste ticks, is annoying on the boss, and can really only be used for pure wave farming as it makes the boss nearly impossible.
  • (1:00) Gnomonkey suggests making the bees like Zebak jugs with no attack delay and requiring only one tick to attack, enabling time saves such as free bonus splits from a one-tick scythe, one-tick Venator ricochets and one-tick chinchompas.

Colosseum invocations

  • (1:25) After the update, Doom stacks reset to zero at the end of each wave, death is guaranteed at 15, 10 or 5 stacks depending on the tier, and only Coliseum sources apply stacks, so self-dealt damage like the Soul Reaper axe or divine potions no longer adds Doom.
  • (1:31) Gnomonkey says Doom level 1 is a completely free invocation for almost any player, though he counted 17 hits in his own first completion, so it might not be free for a first cape; after first cape he thinks most people would take tiers 1 and 2.
  • (1:31) Gnomonkey takes Doom tier 3 for speedruns as a free invocation because he takes no brews, so tanking 5 hits kills him anyway.
  • (2:03) Gnomonkey wishes Doom kept some stacks at the end of the wave, for example subtracting five stacks per wave, so it is not completely free for most players but tier three is no harder.

Manti Mayhem

  • (2:03) Manti Mayhem replaced the Doom Scorpion invocation and has three tiers: tier 1 adds an extra projectile per orb (hits twice as often and gives two Doom stacks), tier 2 adds a venom effect to Manticore damage, and tier 3 removes the forced melee orb in the final slot so the attack order is totally random.
  • (2:37) Gnomonkey says this is a much more interesting direction than the originally proposed scaling Manticore max hits, which he called the most boring and lazy thing to add; learners will likely avoid it because one missed orb flick will smite your prayer and kill you.
  • (3:03) Manti Mayhem's venom requires two sand fuse doses to cure, making average runs tighter on prayer, and Gnomonkey uses Lunars with a spellbook swap and the Ring of Shadows to smuggle runes and spam Cure Me.
  • (3:35) The average missed Manticore orb hits for close to 50 damage and will almost certainly instantly smite you with Blasphemy; Gnomonkey died multiple times from missing a flick, and decided taking it for speedruns is bad, instead using a combination of Doom, Myopia and Flare.
  • (3:35) Gnomonkey suggests reordering the Manti Mayhem tiers to venom first, then two orbs, then double damage, since tier 1 double damage is by far the most dangerous upgrade.

Colosseum invocations

  • (4:06) As of the update, Myopia now affects autocast spells while manually cast spells remain unaffected.
  • (4:06) Gnomonkey calls this a beyond dumb change, because you should never autocast anyway as it has a one-tick delay, and it only makes things harder for early wave farmers; he says spells should never behave differently with autocast versus manual.

Colosseum invocations

  • (4:40) After the update, Relentless tiers 1 and 2 make enemy attacks ignore 33 percent and 66 percent of your defence, tier 3 is unchanged and ignores all defence, and the bonus minimum hits stay at 1, 3 and 6 per tier.
  • (4:40) Gnomonkey says this is what he wanted changed: before, Relentless basically turned off your Torva and was never picked except on the boss; he now thinks tier 1 is very viable and a potential pick in later waves, though he would still avoid tier 2 and definitely tier 3.

Colosseum invocations

  • (5:06) The update increased the Totemic respawn timer from 1 minute to 2 minutes after a totem is destroyed and reduced healing from 40 percent to 30 percent of the targeted NPC's health.
  • (5:06) Gnomonkey wants totems to work like Zebak jugs with zero-tick shots and guaranteed max hits like Fremennik and Bees, since they do not have 100 percent accuracy and he once missed a Twisted bow shot on one across the arena, which nearly killed him.
  • (5:35) Gnomonkey says the longer timer makes Totemic fine for the boss fight because you only get a single totem, but it is still a no-go for waves.

Opinion: Colosseum invocation overhaul

  • (5:42) Gnomonkey thinks Frailty's overhealing block should be moved to tier 3, since Frailty makes Blasphemy always the starting invocation and makes the start of Colosseum boring and not really a roguelite.
  • (6:07) Gnomonkey says Re-entry is the most interesting invocation but too punishing to usually pick; he suggests tier 1 should dissolve after about 15 seconds, tier 2 be permanent for the wave and tier 3 permanent for the Colosseum.
  • (6:40) Gnomonkey suggests clearer visual indicators for Volatility, such as a shockwave animation, rings and sparks on the mob, and says RuneLite could draw a radius marker when things die.
  • (7:09) Gnomonkey wants the Fremennik archer change reverted, saying it was refreshing for casual and speedruns, Venator ricochets off archers under targets were slightly better than scything, and a mobile med kit you can rely on was interesting.
  • (10:03) Gnomonkey considers the glory system completely useless and suggests turning it into a loot modifier, so that taking bad invocations on purpose for better loot would be a deeper system.

Fortis Colosseum

  • (7:41) Gnomonkey says all the rewards aside from the quiver and the Colosseum cape are dead content, and that he saw only a few drops on day one and nothing since.
  • (7:55) Echo boots recoil one damage on a hit splat taken per four ticks in a 3x3 area around you; Gnomonkey says they are roughly one-fifth as effective as a recoil ring and likely not worth using over Primordial boots even at Vardorvus or Duke.
  • (8:05) Gnomonkey says the Glaive is outclassed by the Dragon warhammer and Bandos godsword except at Maiden and Mega-scale Chambers, and its defence drain is 10 percent each for 20 percent total; he suggests 15 percent per splat for 30 percent total, and would be happy with 40.
  • (9:04) Gnomonkey calls Sunfire armour a troll and fashion scape at best, saying nobody is farming Colosseum for it, but it is good that it was made obtainable in the early waves as promised.
  • (9:04) Gnomonkey asks Jagex to fix Colosseum NPC hitboxes, saying you can click between an NPC's legs and armpits, which can cost you a whole pillar stack; the Serpent Shaman has a box but other monsters have a pixel-perfect outline.
