Topics covered

Thieving

  • (0:00) Gnomonkey considers Thieving a great early 99 to get, giving a sizable amount of cash, and a pretty relaxing, low-intensity skill if you take the semi-AFK route.
  • (0:00) Gnomonkey says he considered a general 1-99 Thieving guide but thieving has so many methods that the video would be too long, so he planned to split the other methods into a separate video.
  • (0:00) Thieving equipment only affects pickpocketing success rates, not alternate training such as Pyramid Plunder or stalls.
  • (2:24) Gnomonkey says the early Thieving levels up to level 55 are quite intensive, the opposite of relaxing, and recommends doing quests to skip as much of the grind as possible.
  • (2:24) Doing the quest shown on screen in the video gives 22,500 Thieving XP and skips straight to level 37.
  • (2:24) From levels 1 to 5, Gnomonkey's best option is pickpocketing men or women, found in a bunch in Lumbridge; if you are not a hardcore Ironman he would just pickpocket them until you die.
  • (2:57) Level 5 Thieving takes only 49 successful pickpockets, and hardcore Ironmen need to bring food to avoid dying; dodgy necklaces also help here.
  • (2:57) After level 5, go to Ardougne for the baker's stall, the fastest method up to level 25: stand underneath the baker where guards can never catch you and spam click in place for a semi-AFK method.
  • (2:57) As an Ironman it may be smart to bank the cakes from the baker's stall for early game food; otherwise Gnomonkey would drop everything for faster XP.
  • (3:27) You need to steal from the Ardougne baker's stall 466 times to get from level 5 to 25.
  • (3:27) At level 25 you can steal from the fruit stalls in Great Kourend's Piscarilius house, which is efficient until level 45 (or, to skip blackjacking, up to level 55 before moving to Ardougne Knights).
  • (3:56) The best place to steal from the Piscarilius fruit stalls is a building where you cannot get caught; you can click in place for lower intensity, or run back and forth between them to save one tick on each respawn.
  • (3:56) Running between the fruit stalls is about 20% faster than clicking in place, and you can eat the strange fruits you receive to restore run energy; Gnomonkey would probably just click in place.
  • (4:26) You need to steal 5,672 fruit to get from level 25 to 55 at the fruit stalls; coming from the quest shortcut at level 37, level 37 to 55 takes 4,971 successful thieves.
  • (4:26) Gnomonkey calls Knights of Ardougne one of the lowest-intensity methods in the game, available from level 55.
  • (6:53) At level 95 with the Ardougne cape you stop failing Knight pickpockets, so Knights require no resources beyond that point and can be done all the way to 99.
  • (7:20) Gnomonkey says it is a good idea to do Sorcerer's Garden at least from level 65 to 75, or even to 80 if you prefer the garden to Knights.
  • (7:20) Sorcerer's Garden gives 140k Thieving XP an hour, significantly better than Knights of Ardougne at level 65, which give around 80k XP an hour.
  • (7:20) Gnomonkey would probably leave the Sorcerer's Garden at 75 if you get no money from it, since Knights become comparable then and completely overtake it for both XP and money at level 80.
  • (7:52) Gnomonkey lists men/women, baker's stall, fruit stalls, Knights and Sorcerer's Garden as the best low-intensity options to 99, with Elves and Vampyres as options to boost gp an hour.

Thieving equipment

  • (0:29) Dodgy necklaces have 10 charges each; on being caught pickpocketing there is a 25% chance of preventing damage and the stun, using one charge, allowing you to keep pickpocketing.
  • (0:29) At only about 1k each, Gnomonkey says there is no reason not to use dodgy necklaces all the time while pickpocketing.
  • (0:29) The Rogue's outfit can be acquired at level 50 Thieving and Agility and provides double loot from pickpocketing.
  • (0:59) The Rogue's outfit does not make the skill more intensive; for coins it gives a single standard coin pouch plus a stack of loose coins equal to the pouch, and it doubles other loot, which helps with Elves and enhanced crystal teleport seeds (you get two instead of one).
  • (0:59) The Ardougne medium diary gives a 10% increased success rate for thieving in Ardougne, and the hard diary extends it to the rest of the game, without needing to wear the Ardougne cloak.
  • (1:26) Gloves of silence increase pickpocket success rate by 5% and break after 62 pickpockets, but the bonus does not stack with the Ardougne diary benefit; they require 54 Hunter.
  • (1:26) Gnomonkey has never found gloves of silence useful because of the 54 Hunter requirement, and says most pickpocketing is in Ardougne anyway, where the medium diary is easy to get the stats for.

Mouse Keys

  • (1:55) Gnomonkey calls Mouse Keys, a program that comes with Windows, almost essential for Thieving training: it lets you control the mouse with the numpad, so you can trap a thieving target and left-click with the number five without accidentally moving the mouse.
  • (1:55) Gnomonkey says rebinding a key to left click with programs from the internet or AutoHotkey is not against the game rules because it is a one-to-one action.

Knights of Ardougne

  • (4:26) Ardougne Knights can be easily trapped and repeatedly clicked on without moving your mouse, and the left-click option can be set to pickpocket by setting the NPC attack options to hidden.
  • (4:57) One recommended Knights spot is the bank just west of the market; hop into the Thieving Host clan chat to find a world with a 'splasher', who are always active.
  • (4:57) NPCs normally move after standing in one spot for 300 seconds, but this timer does not apply while an NPC is in combat, so you can fix your mouse and camera in a specific orientation and keep thieving without moving.
  • (4:57) The bank spot is two tiles from the bank for withdrawing more food and dodgy necklaces.
  • (5:27) The downside of the bank spot is that the right-click option messes up when enough people fail at once, so it becomes annoying when packed, and the inventory flicker method does not work because you cannot line up the inventory with your mouse.
  • (5:27) Gnomonkey prefers the building just northeast of the market, where a specific Knight can be speared into the building so it can only wander in its southern two tiles; pull the knight south of the window right of the door, spear him north, then shut the door behind him.
  • (5:56) Gnomonkey usually just hops worlds to find a spot where someone has already lured the Knight into the building; the Knight stays stuck there until killed by someone.
  • (6:25) Inventory flicker method: line up your inventory in a specific orientation, rebind the F key for the inventory in RuneLite's Key Remapping plugin (or hold F) so it flickers, leave the top-left inventory slot empty and spam left click, ideally with Mouse Keys numpad 5 or a key rebound to left click.
  • (6:25) With this method your character walks between the tiles as the Knight moves, so the mouse only needs to move for healing and equipping dodgy necklaces.
  • (6:53) You eventually have to bank occasionally for more necklaces and food, unless above level 95, but the house spot is much more relaxed than the crowded bank spot.

Sorceress's Garden

  • (7:20) A semi-complicated setup for the Sorcerer's Garden lets you click through the whole maze in a single click, giving about 40 seconds of AFK time; Gnomonkey has a separate video on it.
  • (7:20) Sorcerer's Garden gives 140k Thieving XP an hour versus about 80k an hour from level 65 Knights.

Elves

  • (7:52) Pickpocketing elves becomes available at level 85 Thieving.
  • (7:52) Elves are a serious hit to XP if you leave right at level 85, but give significantly better money, dropping enhanced crystal teleport seeds; with the Rogue's outfit you receive two seeds per drop.
  • (7:52) You can get an elf stuck in a building near the house portal and spam pickpocket, going to your house for health restoration; Gnomonkey has a separate video on this.
  • (8:23) At the time of the video the enhanced crystal teleport seed sat at 2.2M, down from 3M, so the elf method was closer to 2.4M gp an hour (his rates were at 99 Thieving with the Ardougne cape).
  • (8:23) Gnomonkey says you can expect closer to 1.5M gp an hour at level 85, with around 100k Thieving XP an hour, still an incredibly good money method that a few of his clanmates used to 99 to boost their banks.

Vampyre

  • (8:54) Vampyre thieving was added with the Sins of the Father quest, is very similar to Elves, and requires 82 Thieving versus 85 for elves.
  • (8:54) Vampyre thieving gives rare blood shards used to make the Blood fury; because the Blood fury was pretty bad at the time, shards sat at only about 6.5M and are 5 times rarer than crystal seeds from elves.
  • (8:54) Gnomonkey took down an earlier video on vampyre thieving after finding the shards were 1 in 5k rather than the 1 in 1k he thought.
  • (9:20) Gnomonkey says that if Jagex buffs the Blood fury (which was being discussed) and shards hit around 12M, vampyre thieving could equal or beat elves, and advises checking prices of both before choosing.
