Mortimer is an undead skeleton Slayer master from Wyrmscraig (first heard as "Wormscraig") who presents several assignments to choose from instead of assigning a single task12. He has a Sailing level requirement to reach his island and is the highest-level Slayer master in the game, requiring 70 Slayer and 100 combat, or 99 Slayer. The only other Slayer master with a Slayer requirement is Duradel at 50 Slayer32.
Gnomonkey expected Mortimer to become the meta Slayer master because of the choice of tasks, with everyone moving over unless he had many bad tasks3. Once the details were published, he was less sure for specific goals. He doubts Mortimer will be best for points or XP, and thinks the modifiers go further than necessary8910.
Assignments
Each assignment has its own modifier rather than letting the player choose a task outright. Jagex describes this as an alternative style of play that does not replace existing masters11. Mortimer offers two assignments, and a third choice unlocks after enough tasks4. The same modifier can appear on several choices, all five modifier types are equally likely, and he never offers the same creature twice in one set of choices12.
Mortimer exclusively offers tasks with superior monsters. This gives more agency over superior unique grinds such as the imbued heart, but he cannot assign tasks that have no superiors13. As a result, demons such as tormented demons and demonic gorillas, and bosses such as Cerberus, are not assigned by him, so another Slayer master is needed for those7. He also includes very low-level tasks such as crawling hands and cave crawlers, with low quantities and decreased-quantity modifiers, which help reach the 100-task unlock faster14.
Task extensions work with Mortimer, but task unlocks that specify certain masters do not. Mortimer can therefore assign Griffins, Aquanites, Basilisks, warped terror birds and more from the start without unlocking them15.
Skips, blocks and stores
Skipping an assignment costs 100 Slayer points. Turael cannot reset Mortimer assignments, so Turael skipping is not possible, and only two block slots are available while using him, each costing 120 Slayer points6. An unwanted task can be skipped, stored in one of the player's shared store slots, or finished before another assignment is taken13. Gnomonkey thinks the two blocks would probably go on warped creatures and drakes but is unsure, since almost everything has the same weight16.
Modifiers
Every task has a modifier that can add Slayer points, increase or decrease task quantity, boost Slayer XP, improve clue scroll drop rates, or boost the chance to hit the superior creature's unique table7. Players see modifiers after completing a certain number of tasks1.
| Tasks completed | Unlock |
|---|---|
| Start | Slayer points and task quantity modifiers5 |
| 25 | Clue scroll bonuses5 |
| 50 | Slayer XP modifiers5 |
| 75 | Superior drop rate modifiers5 |
| 100 | Third task choice5 |
Mortimer gives zero Slayer points per task; the only way to get points from him is the points modifier, which ranges from 5 to 40 points depending on the task7. Gnomonkey is unsure whether this is multiplied by task streak, wants clarification, and thinks it will not be a good way to get points9. Jagex said Konar would still be best for Slayer points17.
The clue scroll modifier ranges from about 35% up to 150%. Gnomonkey notes most appear to be for hard clues, which are not the ones people usually go for, and sees little benefit in it1010.
Modifier strength is tuned per task. Jagex says XP bonuses vary because tasks already vary significantly in efficiency, so they are balanced individually per creature18. Tasks that are already good, such as smoke devils, get only 5% to 15%, while worse tasks such as Dark beasts get 35% to 75%19. The unique modifier follows the same pattern: small on tasks already good for the heart, such as smoke devils and Araxytes, and up to a 300% increase on tasks with a bad heart chance. On Dark beasts the drop rate increase goes from 200% to 300%2021.
Opinion
Jagex said Duradel would still be better for players who are not picky about tasks17. Gnomonkey agrees Duradel with a solid block list and many burst tasks will still be best for XP, so he sees the XP modifier as odd10. He finds the modifier bonuses like better clue rates feel a little private server and unnecessary, since choosing among tasks is already plenty of incentive. He asks why Mortimer also needs to be best for superior spawns for imbued heart grinds and for clue rates, so that everybody is forced to use him822.
