Summary
A full walkthrough of the Gearscape website (gearscape.net), covering its DPS calculator, the monster-DPS-to-you page, the share-preset feature and the Best Setup finder for mains and Ironmen. Gnomonkey's main takeaway is that the calculator is powerful but ignores context, so players must check each monster's toggles and variants before trusting a number.

Topics covered
Gearscape
- (0:00) Gnomonkey considers Gearscape (gearscape.net) the best tool for working out how to gear for combat in OSRS; its main feature is a DPS calculator, and he prefers it to the OSRS Wiki's DPS calculator, which he also calls really good, because it is far more feature rich.
- (1:02) The most important button on Gearscape's DPS calculator is the small lock in the top right; unlocking it lets you customise the layout, and Gnomonkey says many players miss it.
- (1:28) With the lock off, Gearscape setups can be duplicated or removed, and dragging control panels (shown green when movable, red when not) to the side makes them apply to every setup, so settings do not need to be changed once per setup.
- (1:59) If Gearscape seems to lack a feature, Gnomonkey says it is probably hidden under the lock; there is also a tutorial button that many people miss.
- (3:27) A Gearscape setup can be saved under a name with 'save setup', reloaded later, and shown against the current monster with the eyeball button.
- (4:56) Gearscape can import a player's skill levels from Wise Old Man, which may require the Wise Old Man RuneLite plugin to upload stats first.
- (4:56) Gearscape's stats panel includes less obvious stats such as Mining level (used by Chambers of Xeric mining guardians) and a second current-health field that exists for Dharok's set, scaling its damage between current and max health; lowering it lowers Dharok's DPS.
- (8:26) Gearscape accounts for effects such as Ruby and Diamond bolt procs, Atlatl burn damage, multi-hit weapons, scythe hitting based on enemy size, Venator bow hitting multiple targets and chinchompas hitting the targeted enemy, and offers variants such as a version without burn damage.
- (8:53) Gearscape has weapon, boss and armour variants for everything, so you can calculate only the damage that actually grants XP, for example Atlatl without the Eclipse burn damage when training.
- (23:54) Gnomonkey says Gearscape works with Leagues, as the developer adds relic unlocks and area restrictions, so you can check the best item from your bank in Leagues; he calls this probably its most powerful use and plans to use it a lot for Grid Master.
- (24:22) Gnomonkey says the Gearscape team is friendly, takes suggestions on its Discord, and fixes bugs or explains mistakes quickly; he credits a developer called Kenny with adding the average-hit defence-drain figure for godswords a day after Gnomonkey suggested it.
- (25:22) Gnomonkey argues you can use Gearscape to quickly check claims such as 'use a Bofa on Baba' instead of repeating common misconceptions and noob traps.
Gearscape
- (2:27) To use Gearscape's DPS calculator, enter your gear slot by slot, choose the monster, then set the combat style, potions, prayers, spell and toggles such as being on a Slayer task; the combat style chosen changes the DPS.
- (3:57) Gearscape lets you swap single items to compare; in Gnomonkey's example a strength amulet beat an amulet of glory against the Gemstone Crab because the extra strength bonus mattered more than the lost accuracy.
- (3:57) In Gnomonkey's Gemstone Crab example the Dragon dagger special attack (18 DPS shown) and the Arcane blade special, which he calls a common early spec, came out extremely close, with the Dragon dagger special slightly better.
- (4:30) When checking a special attack in Gearscape you must toggle between 'poke' and 'spec', because the calculator does not assume the spec is being used.
- (5:24) Potions are removed in Gearscape by right-clicking them; removing potions drops DPS dramatically in his Gemstone Crab example, which Gnomonkey uses to show how much being potted matters.
- (5:24) Gearscape includes raid potions, overloads, smelling salts and many unusual items, so raid DPS can also be calculated.
- (5:58) Gearscape lets you compare prayers (for example only Chivalry versus Piety or no prayer) to see how large a prayer upgrade is; Gnomonkey notes that Chivalry versus Piety is not a huge difference because it is mostly accuracy, and praying matters a lot.
- (6:25) For area-of-effect spells you multiply the single-target DPS shown by the number of targets; Gnomonkey says this is why Ice Barrage is so strong.
- (6:25) In Gnomonkey's example, Ibans blast with early mage gear against the Gemstone Crab gave about 4.27 DPS with a 26 max hit using Augury, and about 4.09 without prayer, which he calls weak and a reason to train Magic elsewhere.
- (11:19) Detailed mode in Gearscape shows item prices and stats on hover, total stats and total price when hovering nothing, and the strength bonus you could gain or lose before changing your max hit.
- (11:46) Gnomonkey says that if more than four extra strength bonus is needed for a higher max hit, adding more strength probably will not help, so detailed mode is important for choices like a strength amulet versus a glory.
- (13:07) Gearscape's quest tab holds toggles such as being on task, and its advanced section includes Soul reaper axe stacks, distance from the monster and a flinching toggle.
- (13:07) The flinching toggle in Gearscape models attacking only when stepping in, for example against Kalphite Queen where you wait underneath and step out for a single hit.
- (13:35) For Verzik Vitur, Gearscape's scythe icon toggle models never being bounced by standing next to her when she attacks, showing a tick loss of 15 out of 16, so you lose one attack tick in every 16.
- (14:02) Gnomonkey says Arclight is awful on Duke Sucellus because you are forced to five-tick with it, and Gearscape's toggle for this shows a much worse actual DPS.
Gearscape
- (6:53) Gnomonkey calls the Eclipse atlatl an amazing early weapon that is underrated and incredibly strong; it uses no ammunition, unlike most ranged weapons, which Gearscape handles as a special case.
- (6:53) In Gnomonkey's example the Eclipse atlatl in black dragonhide with no combat potion reached 7.45 DPS against the Gemstone Crab, almost double the staff, because it is a fast and strong weapon.
- (7:27) Atlatl scales with strength bonus, so Gnomonkey says to calc it a lot; adding a strength amulet can actually reduce its DPS if the extra strength does not reach a higher max hit, while a Fighter torso raised the number even though accuracy dropped.
- (7:58) In his example Atlatl reached about 7.96 DPS with a Berserker helm and 9.33 DPS after adding a super strength potion, and adding the Eclipse set's burn damage increased it further.
- (9:21) Ruby bolts do less damage per hit point below 500 of the target; Gearscape has a button to account for monster health, which does not work properly on the Gemstone Crab so Gnomonkey demonstrates it on Zebak.
- (9:50) Against Zebak with salts and bone dagger drain, Gearscape showed the Atlatl being much stronger than a crossbow at full health, and recommended swapping to Atlatl at his full health.
- (10:21) With a Zaryte crossbow against Zebak, Gearscape said to use the crossbow until Zebak reaches 463 health, which is the ideal point to swap weapons; Gnomonkey says this is a super useful feature to check crossbows that people miss.
- (10:51) In Gearscape's groups tab Gnomonkey compared two weapons across the whole Inferno and found the Zaryte crossbow only wins against Jad and Zuk; the tab can also show every boss of an area such as Tombs of Amascut at once.
Monster DPS to you
- (11:46) Gearscape has a monster DPS page that shows a monster's DPS against you; Gnomonkey compared full max melee in Torva versus Oathplate against Vardorvis.
- (12:12) In Gearscape's comparison Oathplate has 342 slash defence versus 291 for Torva, and Gnomonkey says Vardorvis is very strong against slash and heals off the damage he hits you for.
- (12:12) Gearscape's monster DPS page was recently opened up to allow protection prayers, so you can assume correct protection prayers at all times.
- (12:40) With correct protection prayers Vardorvis does about 10% more damage to a player in Torva than in Oathplate, so Oathplate takes 10% less damage and he heals 10% less; Gnomonkey says this page is very useful for God Wars Dungeon.
Gearscape
- (15:03) Gearscape's Best Setup tool takes items from a cash stack or a bank (including an Iron Man's bank) and outputs the best set of gear it can find for a given monster.
- (15:03) Gnomonkey says Best Setup cannot generate a multi-boss setup for hybrid raids such as Chambers of Xeric or Tombs of Amascut, so you must choose the most valuable switches yourself; he says this has been discussed but he doubts it will be added because it would slow calculation.
- (16:01) Best Setup ignores context and only maximises the DPS number, so it can recommend paper armour or Void (for example against Vardorvis, who hits hard and heals off it) when that is a bad idea.
- (16:34) In his Baba example (Tombs of Amascut raid level 300, path level 1, one player) he excludes smelling salts because Baba is a room he would do first, and sets bone dagger or BGS damage to the 20 cap, which Gearscape knows is the cap even if a larger number is entered.
- (17:33) Best Setup lets you exclude boosts, prayers (such as Rigor), spells and attack styles you will not use; turning off unneeded styles, such as slash and crush for Baba, speeds up the minute or two the search takes.
- (18:31) In Best Setup you can right-click a slot and choose exclude if you do not own an item such as an Infernal cape or Dragon Slayer Tudon, and the next search fills the slot with the next best item, such as a Fire cape.
- (18:31) In his Baba example with 100m the Best Setup ranged option reached 7.8 DPS versus 7 DPS for the crossbow; importing that setup into the calculator showed 7.37 DPS in a best case, and Atlatl and mage gave much lower results (about 4.4 for the Atlatl).
- (19:29) Best Setup also tells you which prayer, potion and attack style it expects, for example super combat, aggressive stab and Piety.
- (20:02) To import an Iron Man's bank into Gearscape you use the Bank Memory RuneLite plugin: right-click the current bank entry, choose 'copy item data to clipboard', then use the 'import from RuneLite' button in the include panel and paste.
- (20:02) Toggling 'only include selected items' makes Best Setup ignore the cash stack and use only banked items; Gnomonkey says an Iron's bank is much smaller than all items so the search takes about 10 seconds.
- (21:01) Gearscape sometimes swaps a lower strength option for more accuracy, such as a strength amulet versus a glory, depending on max hits.
- (21:01) Gnomonkey notes the Lightbearer adds only to spec DPS and not normal DPS, so Best Setup will not choose it and you can lock a slot or fill it with something else.
Gearscape
- (21:28) Gnomonkey warns that Gearscape's default numbers can mislead because monsters can have different states and variants, so you should always check the toggle for the specific enemy.
- (21:54) Gnomonkey says Tormented Demons have a shield that is bypassed by using different attack types, and about 60% of a Tormented Demon kill they are 100% accurate, so people wrongly conclude mage is best; inaccurate, high-DPS options such as Atlatl and Dragon dagger specs become very good.
- (22:27) Gnomonkey says the default Yama calculation (for example with a Tumeken's shadow) assumes Yama has negative 30 magic defence, which lasts one cast; afterwards he goes into mage tank mode with plus 60 magic defence, an extra 90 magic defence, and the realistic DPS (he cites 9.12) is much lower.
- (22:54) Gnomonkey says the default setting is not always what you want and sometimes you have to tweak the calculator and consider context, including Slayer contract toggles.
Gnomonkey
- (0:00) Gnomonkey made this guide because, with many World of Warcraft players coming to OSRS, he had noticed misconceptions and misinformation about how to gear up for combat.
- (0:31) In late September 2025 Gnomonkey thanked viewers for reaching 100K YouTube subscribers, saying the milestone came so fast that a surprise Hedron was planning for him was not ready yet (it was expected in a week or two).
- (14:34) As a streamer, Gnomonkey says he uses the share preset button to ask viewers who say his DPS is wrong to send him their calc link.
- (25:22) Gnomonkey announced his next upload would be a video on the common noob traps and pitfalls players fall into.
Gemstone Crab
- (2:27) Gnomonkey's Gearscape example for an Iron Man starting to kill the Gemstone Crab uses basic melee gear: a helm, an amulet of glory, Fighter torso, obsidian legs, climbing boots, Fire cape, Berserker ring, Dragon scimitar and Dragon defender.
- (3:57) Against the Gemstone Crab Gnomonkey says the Dragon dagger special is the best special option and is slightly better than Arcane blade.
- (8:53) Gnomonkey notes crossbows are reduced against the Gemstone Crab because most of the Ruby bolt damage is what counts and extra strength or range bonus gives little.
Tombs of Amascut
- (16:34) Gnomonkey's Baba setup example is Tombs of Amascut raid level 300, path level 1, one player, excluding smelling salts for the first room.
- (20:02) In his own Tombs of Amascut Best Setup against Baba on his hardcore account, the result matched what he already brings into the raid except for the Lightbearer.
- (25:22) Gnomonkey says claims like 'you need a Bofa on Baba' sound suspicious and can be checked in Gearscape, where it turns out not to be very good.
